CHARACTER INFORMATION
Character Name: Wilson Percival Higgsbury
Age: Early 30s
Canon: Don't Starve
Canon Point: Shortly after his millionth death
Character Information: Not much is known about Wilson's early life before the events of the game. We know that he immigrated to the East Coast of the US from Europe, presumably England, and that he lives alone in a rural area and prefers it that way. His field notes from the now-defunct original game blog mention graduate school; it is my belief that he moved after finishing his schooling in order to be able to focus entirely on his scientific pursuits. For reasons I will detail under personality I believe he likely graduated by the skin of his teeth.
In the video that details his backstory, Wilson is shown to be struggling with whatever research he is doing (it's very unclear what his actual goal is. Does he even have one beyond 'doing science'?). A voice speaks out of his radio and offers him secret knowledge and he agrees immediately, and through totally-not-suspect means the information just appears in his brain. He spends all of his time after this incident following the instructions given to him (which include among other things a blood sacrifice) and eventually constructs a portal. The voice in his radio commands him to throw the switch, and he does after some hesitation. It is then that the true nature of the knowledge given to him is revealed: it was a trap. The portal activates and shadowy hands emerge and drag him into the unknown.
And this is where the game begins. Wilson wakes up in an unknown wilderness. Standing in front of him is a very tall man, named Maxwell, who tells him he doesn't look so good and that he better find something to eat. Then Maxwell disappears and Wilson is totally alone, expected to fend for himself. From there the actual in-game events are not linear: Don't Starve is a survival game that centers on learning, and to gain experience the player must die and start over. Wilson can also resurrect in-game through various means and find his own skeleton. With this in mind I will be playing him as though he remembers his deaths even from save to save. From his perspective he has died and woken up in the wilderness only to die again a million times. While his body resets every time he resurrects and so he is technically still in his early thirties, his internal chronological time is much longer.
Much like the actual player of the game, Wilson starts out completely helpless in the wilderness. He dies the very first night because he doesn't know the darkness means instant death and doesn't have a light source prepared (I did this, trust me, it happens). Moving forward he picks up more and more knowledge as time goes on: how to build tools, how to hunt and fish and farm, how to make weapons and medicines. Most importantly he learns how to weaponize the knowledge Maxwell gave him for his own benefit on both the scientific and magical fronts. Each time he comes back he has more knowledge and this allows him to explore further and stay alive longer (barring really bad mishaps). There have also been times he is actually able to successfully build a portal to escape the wilderness, but escape requires braving several much harsher worlds and this Wilson has never made it all the way to the final one. The vast majority of his history comes down to simply surviving. Chopping down trees, building camps, fishing, hunting, fighting giant spiders, desperately trying to stave off the shadowy creatures that lurk in the darkness, the usual.
